Leona Lewis has said that her homecoming Hackney gig at his year’s Radio 1 Weekend is a “huge deal”.

The X Factor star is to open the event on June 23 on Hackney Marshes with the gig headlined by Jay-Z and Rihanna.

Leona told Metro: “I’ve not really done a gig as big as this.

“It’s a huge deal for me. A lot of friends and family can come and see it.”

Asked about a possible collaboration with Rihanna, she added: “We’d have to vibe it and see where it goes and if we’d both be up for it – she’s an amazing artist.”

Lewis is taking part in the BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1 Xtra Academy to inspire young people.

She said: “This will affect the young people. For some, the outlook is not the best.

“Hopefully, people will be part of the Academy or see something inspiring at the show.”

The Academy runs from June 1 to June 22 and will feature input from Labrinth, Dizzee Rascal, Rizzle Kicks, Paloma Faith, Riz Ahmed, Levi Roots, and Trevor Nelson.

Meanwhile, Lewis told the Evening Standard: “I am from Hackney and grew up here and wanted to be involved and give back to the community.

“Everything boils down to money – there is not enough money for education or community groups.

“A lot of important groups are being shut down. This is to give young people an opportunity, to show them that people care and they are not going to be left behind.”

Leona Lewis and Plan B today attacked the education system for failing young people as they launched a project to offer 10,000 Hackney teenagers master classes with leading names from music, acting, fashion and radio.

Singer and rapper Plan B claimed that teenagers were being let down by the Government and needed the help that the BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra Hackney Academy will offer.

It will open next month in the run-up to Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend — the station’s pop festival to celebrate the Olympics. Lewis, 27, said: “I am from Hackney and grew up here and wanted to be involved and give back to the community.

“Everything boils down to money — there is not enough money for education or community groups. A lot of important groups are being shut down. This is to give young people an opportunity, to show them that people care and they are not going to be left behind.”

Lewis and fellow ambassador Plan B, of Forest Gate, will lead the sessions by giving Q&A sessions on how to succeed in the music industry.

Plan B, 28,  said: “As a kid growing up in east London, I felt ignored, I felt I didn’t have a voice. These kids are getting no love. Money is an issue, but it’s also about spending time with them.

“The education they are getting is s**t. Life is not just about academics. They are not taught enough about real life — about things like sex and drugs.

“We need to encourage them that there is another way by getting them to express themselves and discover their true talents. That’s what they need. I can see that they don’t know the hard work that goes into it. None of this (success) was given to us.”

Labrinth, Dizzee Rascal, Lethal B and Rizzle Kicks will also hold music classes. Stylish singer Paloma and Radio1 DJ Fearne Cotton will host fashion seminars, while Ashley Walters, Adam Deacon and Riz Ahmed will teach young people about the film industry.

Dragons’ Den success Levi Roots will give business advice, and BBC presenters including Trevor Nelson and Gemma Cairney will share their knowledge of radio. Other practical workshops at the Hackney Picturehouse will give advice on CVs, interview skills, software development and journalism.

The academy, which will run from June 1 to 22, has been put together by Radio 1, BBC Learning and local organisations.

It will cater for Hackney school pupils and youth groups and applicants can register by emailing takeiton@bbc.co.uk. Hackney Weekend is on June 23 and 24.

She’s usually known for her meek and mild manner, but this week saw Leona Lewis ‘hit out’ like she’s never done before. Find out why she’s slamming ‘College Dropout’ Kanye West below…

In response to a lyric in the Rapper’s cut ‘Theraflu‘, Lewis tweeted:

Heard that awful Kanye W song talking about minx dragging on the floor. What an awful thing to be proud of!

I take all my love for him back!

The line she is referring to reads as following:

Can’t a young nigga get money anymore?
Tell PETA my mink is draggin’ on the floor
Can I have a bad bitch wit’out no flaws
Come to meet me wit’out no drawers?

Clearly peeved by the comment (most likely due to her work as animal rights activist) Lewis is yet to receive a response from West but did receive support from fans.

Leona is currently gearing up for the release of ‘Glassheart’, her third studio LP due out this November.

Hey Guys! New day… new rumour! The british magazine Dailystar, revealed yesterday that Simon Cowell is on the verge of launching a special concert event, reuniting two of the best ambassadors of British pop music, pop songstress Leona Lewis and teenager’s boys band One Direction… Once again, only a rumour for now!

SIMON Cowell is planning a massive fightback after the worst week of his career.

The telly boss has been slammed for his treatment of women after biographer Tom Bower revealed he had sex with Dannii Minogue and ogled Cheryl Cole.

But now he’s lined up a series of moves to hit back at new rival The Voice.

He will overhaul The X Factor by getting rid of the boot camp and also stage a TV concert featuring previous reality show stars.

He is also considering an offer to write his own book to hit back at Bower’s unauthorised version.

Cowell’s bad week was marked by Bower’s revelations and friction in his relationship with his paymasters ITV.

But he is due to meet ITV boss Peter Fincham on Thursday.

Cowell knows he has to refresh The X Factor after The Voice won a new army of fans.

So he’ll get rid of the show’s second round boot camp, meaning an end to first-round sympathy votes.

Our insider said: “With The Voice featuring so many great singers he’s keen to keep his throne and wants to find the next Leona Lewis – not the next Jedward.”

His planned TV gig will be at Wembley Arena with Leona Lewis and One Direction tipped as potential headliners.

Publishers Harper Collins have offered Simon the chance to write his book and Cowell’s publicist Max Clifford is trying to arrange a prime-time telly interview next week to rescue his reputation.

Cowell is also looking to boost his career in the US by launching a new movie division of his company Syco under Adam Milano, a leading studio executive.

Cowell said: “I’m really pleased Adam is joining us.

“We have a lot of new projects coming up.”
