There is one word that haunts Leona Lewis in every interview or critique that is written about her, it is ‘nice’. When she won The X Factor in 2006 as a shy and polite 21-year-old it was probably an appropriate adjective. But six years on – as an internationally famous recording artist – Leona is aware that her ongoing reputation for ‘niceness’ has somehow been interpreted as a euphemism for ‘boring and bland’. Yet there is nothing remotely boring or bland about Leona, and nice is far too feeble a word to describe a woman who is, in fact, strong, funny, opinionated and, by her own admission, ‘a bit of a control freak’…

‘I think a lot of people in this industry did kind of dismiss me because they thought I was too nice. People would say, “Oh my God, why are you so polite, why don’t you do anything interesting or scandalous like take drugs?” It’s weird in the music industry because you are damned if you do the bad stuff and damned if you don’t,’ she says.

Leona Lewis chats to Ahlan! ahead of her appearance at the Chequered Flag Ball in Abu Dhabi

You’ve been to the UAE before. What are your favourite memories from visiting?
Yes, I’ve been on holiday a few times to Dubai and I’ve also been to Doha, but this will be my first time in Abu Dhabi. I really like the mix of tradition and modernism. It’s really intriguing.

You rose to fame after winning X Factor. Do you still watch the show?
It’s a great show and I owe a lot to it so I’m always going to be a fan, but I’ve changed a lot since the show. I’ve really developed and matured as an artist.

Are you dating at the moment? Give us all the juicy deets!
All I’m saying is that my weekend at the F1 is going to be a girly affair – a real chance to let my hair down with the girls and enjoy myself for a few days after what’s been a really hectic album launch.

Any words for your fans in the UAE?
Just to say that I can’t wait to see you all at the Chequered Flag Ball on 2 November. I love the glamour of F1 and everything that goes with it so I’m really looking forward to what the F1 weekend in Abu Dhabi has to offer.

Reading Fifty Shades of Grey. I was forced to read it – my friends kept talking about it and I wanted to be able to take part in their conversations – but I have to say I’m enjoying it. I try not to read it in public, though.

Watching Bel Ami, a film set in the 19th century, starring Robert Pattinson. He plays a poor man who climbs the social ladder by seducing women. I just love the costumes, the scenery, the script – everything.

Eating at Mildreds, a vegetarian restaurant in Soho. It’s small and relaxed and has a great little private dining room my friends and I sometimes hire. Try the pan-fried halloumi with spinach and cherry tomatoes. mildreds.co.uk

Listening to the Beach Boys – they always get me up and going in the morning. I also love Miike Snow for their lyrics and Eva Cassidy inspires me.

Drinking Starbucks’ signature hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream. It’s probably a million calories but I love it.

Buying yoga gear from Sweaty Betty and lululemon. I like Bikram yoga because you sweat so much it detoxes you. You come out with really clear skin. It’s also really hard work, but I like a good challenge. sweatybetty.com, lululemon.co.uk

Hanging out at Shoreditch House. The bar has an old British feel to it and you can order pretty much anything. shoreditchhouse.com

Logging on to Instagram to check out tattoo art, which I have become a bit obsessed with recently. I have a few myself. instagram.com
