LOS ANGELES — “I Am” is Leona Lewis’ first post-Simon Cowell offering, but the aftermath of their professional split resonates throughout her fifth studio album.
“It was very hard and very nerve-racking because I didn’t know what I’d be walking into once I left Simon. I had no idea,” Lewis said. “I needed to kind of create my own path, and I went out and created the album based on … the strength that it took to walk away from different situations.”
Cowell signed the British-born singer to his label, Syco Music, after she won “The X-Factor” in 2006. In 2014, after collaborating on four albums over eight years, Lewis wrote an open letter to fans detailing her decision to leave Syco.
“I cannot make music that does not speak to my soul, and as scary as it seemed, I could no longer compromise myself, and so I decided to leave,” Lewis, 30, said in a handwritten note posted on her Twitter account.
But in a recent interview, the “Bleeding Love” singer insisted there’s no bad blood.
“Simon has been so amazing and instrumental in my career, but it was just time for me to move on and time for me to do something different, and I wanted to seek out a different label that had kind of a different energy,” she said.
Lewis, who’s signed with Universal’s Island Records, said she’s in a better place emotionally and aims to inspire with “I Am.”
She sings about the courage to come back after being held down in the song “Thunder” and feeling stronger and freer on her own in the album’s title track.
“I definitely have learned a lot about my own strength and how much I can take. I can take things into my own hands and take control of situations that maybe I wouldn’t have before. So I wrote a lot about that,” she said.

Leona Lewis is in the US right now, promoting her new album “I Am”. A few days ago,she attended VH1 Save The Music Foundation School Visit in Brooklyn, New York. She met some students and took pictures with fans, while talking about music industry… Have a look at the exclusive HQ pictures below!
Leona Lewis was in the studio late one night when a friend delivered some big news: “Stevie Nicks is here. I need you to get out of the studio right now.” What transpired next is the kind of transformative moment that changes a person’s life.
“I snuck in to where she and the rest of Fleetwood Mac were rehearsing for their world tour,” Lewis recalls. “The next thing I know, she was giving me a pep talk.”
We’ve all had pep talks from Stevie, but for us, that velvety coo most likely oozed out of a car stereo or echoed from a far-off stage. It’s an entirely different experience when she wraps her arms around you, looks you straight in the eyes, and says: “We need to hear your voice. We needed to hear your music.”
That chance encounter came at a time when Lewis — the titanium-voiced singer who exploded onto the scene in 2006 after steamrolling her way to the U.K. X Factor crown — found herself at a crossroads. After a seven year, four album run with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco, an emotional hand-written letter posted to Lewis’ Twitter and Facebook last September announced that she and her surrogate family were parting ways.
It was a painful decision for Lewis. After all, these were the people that took a timid theater kid from London’s hardscrabble Hackney, and helped transform her into a global pop superstar. But as Lewis tells it, something changed along the way. The label got too big, her relationship with Cowell became diluted, and when she was asked to record a cover album instead of one featuring her own material, it was time to cut ties.
Busy weekend for Leona! Earlier today she performed at the well known UK music festival Hyde Park and she was incredible! With a set of 6 songs Leona literally shined! She began the show with an amazing semi-acoustic rendition of ‘I Am’ (this one was SO good), followed by her hit ‘Better in Time’. Leona then heat things up with a fun but great arrange of ‘Fire Under My Feet’ which was followed by her all time hit ‘Bleeding Love’ in which she sounded gorgeous. The highlight of the evening was when she presented and sang her new track ‘I Got You’ which sounds so so good live that you won’t believe it!. She closed her set with the always loved ‘Run’ and it also was magical and good as always! As we are used to do we have High Quality shots from the show and also the full set in video thanks to Leona Lewis Portugal
